So You Think You Know Your Government?

Civics isn't being taught in schools anymore. It breaks my heart, but it's true. The result of that is that most people are, well, pretty ignorant about our government.

The American Civic Literacy project has floated a test on its website to see how much we know about how our government works and who's responsible for what in the day-to-day operations of it. I took the test--cold--today and scored 88.87%--got 4 wrong out of 33.

If you fail this test, and most people do, maybe you'll join me in trying to encourage your public school system to add Civics back into its curriculum. It would be refreshing to have our schools teaching children what they need to know in order to be good citizens--like what's in those pesky documents on which our country was formed.

Again, most people taking this test fail. Including your elected officials and graduates of the most prestigious universities in the Country.

Apparently, earning a college degree does little to increase knowledge of America’s history, key texts, and institutions. The average score among those who ended their formal education with a bachelor’s degree is 57%, or an “F.”

That is only 13 percentage points higher than the average score among those who ended their formal education with a high school diploma.
