Adolph Hitler Saddam's Idol
The History Channel aired a special on Feb 7 called Saddam and the Third Reich. It was an amazing historical account of the origins of Saddam's Baath Party's connection to the Nazi Party in WWII Germany. New information to me was Saddam's step father/uncle's major role in the Nazi regiment known as perhaps the most brutal of all the regiments in the Nazi Army--commiting unimaginable atrocities in the name of Hitler--and his involvement in forming the Baath party in Iraq.
This also was a story about the battles that caused Great Britain to lose the Middle East during WWII and a history of how 20th Century Iraq came under Saddam's rule. The cities detailed on the campaign maps where the WWII battles took place almost 65 years ago were familiar: Fallujah, Mosul, Kirkuk, Baghdad. Everything old is new again. We saw a good portion of this program and wanted to review it more closely, so we checked the listings to see when it would air next. In our area, there were no listings for another showing this month, but there was a link to the History Channel's web page where a DVD copy of the episode can be purchased. It's absolutely worth your time to continue searching for the next showing in your area.

"Few people realize that the Baath party was actually formed upon the principles and organizational structure of the Nazi party. Iraq, because of its oil and hatred of Jews, was an important battleground between the Axis and Allied powers in World War II. Nazi propaganda was broadcast throughout Baghdad, and Iraqis often went on rampages against Jews throughout the war. One of the most ardent Nazi supporters during WWII was named Khairallah Talfah. Talfah was Saddam's uncle. After the war, many of the key Iraqi Nazi supporters, all of whom evaded prosecution, wound up involved in Saddam's rise to power. This special examines the key individuals of the Iraqi-Nazi connection, the little-known battle for Iraq in WWII, and the strange link to Saddam Hussein."

The program was aired, all right, but at a time when few people watch TV, and then only once (unlike most History Channel offerings, which are repeated ad nauseam).
The concern I have is that Germany, angry over its defeat and the reparations to be paid to Jews, may have funnelled money to Muslem countries in the early 1960's and beyond.
At the time, no one questioned why huge numbers of "guest workers" were imported from there while family members of U.S. service members were absolutely forbidden to accept a job from a German employer unless they were German nationals themselves. Of course money would be sent "home" by the guest workers... but was it only a workers' savings going to dear old mother?
