The Iraqi Consitution Goes Forward Without Sunni or US So-Called Liberal Approval Stamp

The Sunnis in Iraq have withheld approval of the Iraqi Constitution. It's an understandable political ploy. This is the group that held all the power under Saddam, who if you remember declared war on the USA after Kuwait was liberated in 1991, so being forced to extend rights to the people they lorded over and murdered for so many years is to probably be expected. Democracy doesn't really fit the Sunni idea of government in Iraq. Never has.

However, it looked like they may have, for a time, realized that with the eyes of the world upon them they would have to throw in with the rest of the country to be a player at all in the democratic future of Iraq. They, obviously, prefer to bet that they can terrorize their neighbors into submission again and defeat the Constitution.

You can count on violence against those who endorse the Constitution increasing exponentially until at least October 15 when the Constitution goes out for a referendum before all the people of Iraq. The attacks against those who vote once again will be many. This is the last horn blowing for Saddam's old team and they know it.

They also know that they can always change their mind and get into the process. Everyone else wants everyone represented for one reason or another.

Our US politicos who still can't seem to embrace the fall of Saddam, are naturally flapping their jaws for the media. Delighting in yet another opportunity to sling dung.

For instance, Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr., Delaware Democrat, told ABC's "This Week" that it is too early to determine whether the Sunni opposition is simply political, but that if genuine, it could have a disastrous effect. "It's just too hard to tell how much of this is posturing at this point and how much of this is going to result in people taking up arms," Mr. Biden said. "At the end of the day, if the Sunnis and that entire portion of the country opts out of this process, that's a formula for civil war."

Joe, Joe, Joe, it's too early for whom to tell? It's posturing if it doesn't work and the Constitution passes. It's a full blown campaign to murder and intimitdate as many Kurds and Shiites and voting Sunnis as possible so they will not vote at all or they will vote against the Constitution and, the Sunnis hope, return them to the rightful power they believe they should be enjoying right now. Mr Biden and his ilk would like nothing more than a civil war in Iraq. There are elections looming at home, after all.

Our President has no intention of allowing the Sunnis to get the advantage they hope for. Attention all hard heads! We are in Iraq until the Iraqis form a democratic government and can maintain their own police and military effectively. It would help if you hard heads kicked in and supported the US military and helped the Iraqi people instead of undermining them at every turn.

I need to digress for a minute. There was a brief moment a long time ago, before Biden's brain surgery, that I thought he had so much potential--Presidential potential. Nowadays, he's sounding so Jesse Jackson-like it's scary. If there's a camera around--or a reporter--Joe's talkin'. And he's talking trash. He's also starting to look desperate to me. His party isn't picking up on him for The Candidate job. I haven't noticed his name on any short list. But he's positioning his heart out. It's a good thing Delaware is a small state. Cuts down on the people he's NOT serving while he's campaigning for himself.

The Iraqi people are counting on the US and its allies to finish this job so they have not signed their own death certificate by participating in the birth of their own democracy. They believe us. Anyone, and I mean anyone, who wants our troops and allies withdrawn from Iraq needs to consider the deadly consequences to the hopeful innocent Iraqi people.

You also need to change the way you identify yourselves.

My Webster's dictionary defines a liberal as: "broad minded; favoring reform or progress, as in religion, education, etc; specifically favoring political reforms; giving freely; generous. ample; abundant."

So, if you want us to abandon the Iraqi people now, you might be an isolationist, or provincial, a dove, or conservative ("tending to conserve established institutions and methods and to resist or oppose any changes in these; prudent; safe; preservative"), but you are not really "liberal."

You are not a "liberal" person if you want to hold tight for yourself alone the rights to live freely, to vote for political representation, to enjoy free speech and the freedom of choice in your religious beliefs!
